We will be back in class on Thursday 10 November at 1pm, in room 202 in the STAPS building. I will be continuing to talk about British visual art.
The time of term has come to give you your marked assignment. Here it is:
Homework assignment
Can visual art be popular culture? Can modern visual art be popular ? How have visual art practitioners and institutions tried to make their art more popular in the UK? Discuss these questions using both carefully chosen examples we have seen in class and examples which you have found yourselves.
Write 1200 -1500 words in English, and re-read very carefully.
Hand in your work before the 3rd December at midnight, by email to john.mullen {AT] univ-rouen.fr. Your work must be in the format Word or ODT or RTF.
DO do some of your own research so as to find different examples and problems.
DO hedge (Write “On might conclude that” or “many commentators consider that…” etc. in order to nuance your statements).
DO give your own opinion, as well as showing you understand the different controversies.
DO NOT list every artist we have seen in class.
DO NOT plagiarise.

Tues. 20
[…] The next morning we stood in for the land,
and were met by several Canoes filled with people, some of them took courage
and ventured on board. I never saw Indians so much astonished at the entering a
ship before, their eyes were continually flying from object to object, the wildness
of thier looks and actions fully express’d their surprise and astonishment at
the several new o[b]jects before them and evinced that they never had been on
board of a ship before. However the first man that came on board did not with
all his surprise, forget his own interest, the first moveable thing that came
in his way was the lead and line, which he without asking any questions took to
put into his Canoe and when we stoped him said ‘I am only going to put it into
my boat’ nor would he quit it till some of his countrymen spoke to him. At 9
o'clock being pretty near the shore, I sent three armed boats, under the
command of Lieutenant Williamson, to look for a landing place and fresh water.
I ordered him, that if he found it necessary to land to look for the latter not
to suffer more than one man to go out of the boat. As the boats put off an
Indian stole the Butcher['s] cleaver, leaped over board with it, got into his
canoe and made for the shore, the boats pursued but to no effect.
As
there were some venereal complaints on board both the Ships, in order to
prevent its being communicated to these people, I gave orders that no Women, on
any account whatever were to be admited on board the Ships, I also forbid all
manner of connection with them, and ordered that none who had the venereal upon
them should go out of the ships. But whether these regulations had the desired
effect or no time only can discover. It is no more than what I did when I first
visited the Friendly Islands yet I afterwards found it did not succeed and I am
much afraid that this will always be the case where it is necessary to have a
number of people on shore; the opportunities and inducements to an intercourse
between the sex, are there too many to be guarded against. It is also a doubt
with me, that the most skilfull of the Faculty can tell whether every man who
has had the venereal is so far cured as not to communicate it further. I think
I could mention some instances to the contrary. It is likewise well known that
amongst a number of men, there will be found some who will endeavour to conceal
this desorder, and there are some again who care not to whom they communicate
it, of this last, we had an instance at Tongatabu in the Gunner of the
Discovery, who remained a shore to manage the trade for Captain Clerke. After
he knew that he had contracted this disease he continued to sleep with
different women who were supposed not to have contracted it; his companions expostulated
with him without effect; till it came to Captain Clerke’s knowlidge who ordered
him on board.
While the boats were in shore examining the coast we stood on and off with the Ships, waiting their return, at length about noon Mr Williamson came on board and reported that he had seen a large pond behind a beach near one of the Villages, which the Natives told him was fresh water and that there was anchorage before it. He also reported that he attempted to land in a nother place but was prevented by the Indians coming down to the boat in great numbers, and were for taking away the oars, muskets and in short everything they could lay hold upon and pressed so thick upon him that he was obliged to fire, but which one man was killed. But this unhappy circumstance I did not know till after we had left the islands, so all my measures were directed as if nothing of the kind had happened.
Remember to try to find in the document elements which tell us more
- about Cook and about his mission
- about the people he is writing for
- about the local peoples he encounters.
Remember to try to assess what is typical about the incidents described.

Important : M2 thème
Thème M2 (Also blog on master blog)
All M2 students, if I remember correctly, follow for 6 weeks the translation class which is also for agrégation students. Note that the dates of the classes have been slightly modified. You will have classes on 9 November, 16 November, 23 November, 30 November, 7 December and 14 December. The classes will be at 9 am, no doubt in A402. The passages, which you should translate before the classes, can be found here http://www.jcmullen.fr/0922themeagregfinal.pdf . On the first page of the booklet you can find detailed information about handing in translations for personal feedback. On 9 November, we will be working on the passage by Ikor, which is on page 9 of the booklet. Other important information will regularly appear at http://johncmullen.blogspot.com/

M1 MEEF Civilisation britannique. Videos "Britain since 1945"
M1 MEEF CIVILISATION BRITANNIQUE
So far in class, we have had an overview of
British history over the centuries. In this way I hope to have filled in some
gaps and reminded you of key events and processes. Because some of you saw my
overview of “Britain since 1945” only last year in L3, I decided not to do this
in class this year. However, as luck would have it, a couple of years ago some
pandemic or other obliged me to make videos of my classes. You will find here
four half-hour videos outlining the main processes, events and contradictions
in UK society since 1945. Although the aim of these videos was to introduce my course on popular culture, it will serve as an introduction to this period in British history. You just have to ignore the short introduction on administrative matters.

M1 MEEF ... before the homework assignment
The homework assignment will be available soon. In class we will look at some of the general background, and the methodology, which will help you both with the assignment and, later, with the CAPES.
The assignment will be focussed around the theme "Rencontre avec d'autres cultures". I recommend you spend some time looking at this previous homework assignment which I gave a couple of years ago, and the detailed comments I made about students' work. This will hemp you to identify and avoid the classic major mistakes.

M1 séminaire Historiography and commemoration
M1 Seminar Historiography and Memory: The British experience of the First World War.
Good news and bad news. I am ill [but not from Covid]. There will be no class on 19 October. The good news is that in previous years I recorded the corresponding classes. Students are therefore asked to look at the following videos, on my YouTube channel “the history fellow”. These videos are indispensable.
Commemoration 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWtFSLdPUFs
Commemoration 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0u6hicBWuck
Commemoration 3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sF6V8qwf-Tg
Commemoration 4
Note that the first one goes over what we saw in class, but the last two are completely new to you. You should also search around in the international press for other, newer examples of commemoration you will be able to use in the exam.
As you know, this seminar is evaluated by an exam in January. You will find, on the same YouTube channel, in a couple of weeks time, links to other videos which will help you revise, since they cover the same fields we have been looking at over the last five weeks.
L3 James Cook

Part two https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvHJOQYMha4
Part three https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5Y8mZN-U-k
I also recommend you read carefully this post, which I published a couple of years ago for a different class, buut which goes over the key points about he text commentary in civilisation. https://johncmullen.blogspot.com/2017/02/l3-dst-popular-culture.html

I will not be in Rouen on Wednesday 19 October because I am ill (not covid :=)).
I will, sooner or later, finish commenting and returning your translations of the passage from Aubry, and I will post here http://johncmullen.blogspot.com/ annotated translations of Aubry and of the previous passage.
As you know there is no class on the 26th, so I will see you on the 9th November, when we will work on the passage by Ikor.

MEEF M1 rencontres avec d'autres cultures
In the MEEF class, once I have finished the overview of British history, we will be looking at the theme of other cultures - racism, antiracism, multiculturalism, diversity. I highy recommend this issue of the French Journal for British Studies, available free online https://journals.openedition.org/rfcb/655
The series of lectures I am organizing in collaboration with the CRECIB and the Association France-Grande-Bretagne are particularly useful for preparing the CAPES. The first one is on 13th October at 6pm. Nathalie Duclos will be speaking about "The Four Nations" (in French). The lecture is available by zoom and is free. But you must send an email to moreau-anet@orange.fr before the 8th October, if you want to receive the link for the zoom meeting.
If you should be in Paris, you can go in person, lycée Henri IV, rue Clovis, arrive well before 6pm : but you also need to send a mail to the above adress to register (for security purposes).
L3 culture populaire: Evaluation

Voices of Dissent.

This week's passage from Nourissier was rather long. When this is the case, you may if you wish send me a careful translation of the first half of the passage. Please do not send me a rushed translation of the whole passage :=)
I will normally be able to return to you by mail a commented version of your work before the following class. This may occasionally be impossible, because I am away at a conference, or because there are too many translations in a given week.

Is there a right and wrong way to commemorate a war?
I work a lot on commemoration, and this article, about a new project in Normandy, intrigued me.
D-day tribute or theme park? Battle rages over Normandy plan | France | The Guardian
Changes in British politics
This article from The Guardian reflects on the fact that the top levels of British government are less White and Male than they used to be.
What is the meaning of this change? Obviously it does not mean that racism and sexism have disappeared from the UK. It also does not mean that the new government will have as its priority how to make the lives of women and non-white people better.
But it certainly means something!

Canada
I am lucky enough to be going to Canada on holiday this summer (my first time in the country). Naturally, historians on holiday look for museums, but also feel a need to prepare their holidays. I highly recommend the documentary available on YouTube « A Peoples History of Canada ». It is 25 hours in total! Here is the first episode : https://youtu.be/lBdwWOtOWMg

Cours de thème agrégation 09/22
Cours de thème, préparation de l’agrégation
2022-2023 (first class in week of 12 September)
Welcome to your prose composition class
(that is the old-fashioned English way of saying « thème»).
You will be aware that the translation
classes will help you sort out weaknesses in your grammar, and that this will
also gain you points in your other papers, in literature or in civilization.
Here is some information about how the
class will work. Students translate the passages at home before the class (it
is impossible to learn translation by watching other people translate). In
class, we study the students’ translations and my own proposals, and
recommendations are made about working on specific grammar points etc.
A few days after the class, my own
suggested translation, with notes, is posted on my teaching blog
https://johncmullen.blogspot.com/ . This suggested translation remains online
for two weeks, and then is removed.
If students wish to get more detailed
feedback on their work, they may send me by email at john dot mullen at
univ-rouen dot fr their completed translation, one week before we study that
particular passage in class. Translations must be sent in doc or odt format,
not in PDF. I will attempt to return them to you in time for the class. Please
do not give me translations on paper.
Note that the students who succeed at the
agrégation each year are among those who have regularly handed in work during
the year.
Students who are enrolled in the agrégation
interne will occasionally miss a translation class because they have another
scheduled class. Please consult the timetable you will be given
