Agrégation BBC - Rouen students

In last week's class, which I could not come to because I was ill; I was intending to 1) finish the timeline  and 2) Talk about television theory . There will be videos doing each of these things over the next few weeks.

If you wish to practice your dissertation skill, you can write me a dissertation on "The BBC and Modernity" and I will comment on your work.

We have classes in early 2022 on dissertation (2 x 1 hour) and on commentary (3 x 2 hours).

If you have questions, send me an email. And don't forget to search this blog for "BBC" if you want more links to videos, articles etc.

M1 MEEF Overview of British history since the Romans: all the podcasts and slides. Six hours of podcasts and two hours of video

These classes were mostly put together to provide an overview/revision of British history for M1 enseignement. Other students, for the agrégation, for example, may find them useful for revision purposes.

We looked briefly at the main highlights of British history since the Romans. Here you have all the recordings and slides in the same place.

There were four weeks of classes. Here are the slides which cover the whole of the four week course.

Week one

Podcast one looks at the history of Roman Britain

Podcast two looks at the Anglo Saxon invasion and the period up to 1066.

Week two

This podcast on the Middle Ages in Britain, the Norman invasion and all that

This one on the Reformation in Britain

Week three

The civil war and Cromwell’s Commonwealth

The industrial revolution

Week four

This podcast is on empire

This podcast is on the first half of the first half of the 20th century

I recommended for the period since 1945, these videos which I made last year during lockdown:

Britain since 1945 part one

M2 Thème

M2 LES Cours de thème à partir du 27.10

For the second half of the first semester, M2 students will be joining in the translation classes which are also for those preparing the agrégation. You will find the booklet of passages we are translating here:  http://www.jcmullen.fr/0921themebooklet.pdf

On the 27th we will be on passage number seven, by Masse. Please prepare a translation before the class, and bring both the passage and the translation with you. Each week, if you send me your translation by email john.mullen@univ-rouen.fr by the Friday *before* we study that particular passage in class, I will send you by email individualized commentary. Please do not give me anything on paper.

After the class, each week, I post on my teaching blog http://johncmullen.blogspot.com/ a suggested translation with plenty of notes concerning the particular difficulties involved. This translation remains on my blog for two or three weeks only .

If you are thinking of taking the agrégation after your Master’s degree, do not worry – every year the passages are different, on a three year rotation.

You will find the recording here (two and a half hours long)

Agrégation BBC week three Rouen podcast history of the BBC part three

In the third week I looked at the BBC from 1922 to 1945

And here are the slides which accompanied the talk

thème - warning

We do most things online these days - encyclopedias etc. When working on translations, one can often find  help with difficulties of vocabulary online - many online dictionaries are quite good these days, especially if they are accompanied by plenty of examples of the use of a word (eg  https://www.linguee.fr/ )

This is not the case for online grammar, as I was reminded when I was correcting your latest work. I was looking for online explanations of the uses of "have someone do/ make someone do/ get someone to do/ have sthg done/ get sthg done". If you Google this kind of question, most of the answers given by different websites, forums etc are completely incorrect. This may be because amateurs think they understand grammar and do not (whereas amateurs may be quite good at giving examples of vocabulary use). I certainly know from experience that if you ask French people who are not linguistics experts to explain uses of the subjunctive, they will give you hopelessly inaccurate explanations.

So, for grammar explanations, do not look online. The only exception is where I give here on the blog a link. This means I will have checked the site and the explanations will be good. Stick very closely to your Grammaire explicative de l'Anglais...

Rooms for Tuesday and Wednesday
