Read "The Economist"
The Economist - World News, Politics, Economics, Business & Finance
Despite its name, The Economist writes about history, art and politics. It is a very good way of improving your English, since it is one of the best-written magazines in the world in English.

M1 Liberty and liberties in the UK "Tyler Smiles" a song by Attila the Stockbroker
Click on this link to listen to the full version of Attila the Stockbroker's song from the 1990s. He wrote this song to celebrate the successful campaign against the flat rate Poll tax, a campaign which weakened Margaret Thatcher and led to her downfall. In the song, he imagines Wat Tyler, who died in a massive revolt against a flat rate tax many hundreds of years ago, smiling to see the campaign successful today. In particularn the parts of the country which ha dbeen very radical in the fourteenth century were known as conservative regions in the twentieth, and yet were very much involved in this campaign against Margaret Thatcher's policies.

Magna Carta - YouTube
This 8 minute video explains some aspects of medieval government and the magna carta. It's particularly useful for M1 students, because I will be talking about this, but any student of British history should have a look.

Opening Ceremony - London 2012 Olympic Games - YouTube
Here is the opening ceremony from the Olympic games in London 2012. It contains hundreds of references to British identity and some to social conflict. It was directed by Danny Boyle, director of the film "Trainspotting" who was given a great deal of independence, and some sections are considered to be quite critical of the government. Some Conservative newspapers denounced it as "marxist propaganda"!

Possibilité travail pour étudiants Master LLCE Anglais
L'université
Paris 3-Sorbonne nouvelle recrute actuellement 30 tuteurs à distance,
concours.
Il
leur apporte une rémunération appréciable (env. 1300 euros nets par an).

L3 British civilization - Britain since 1945 - "Naming of Parts" by Henry Reed
"Naming of Parts" by Henry Reed
This link takes you to the texte of one of the most famous poems from the Second World War.
First world war poems in Britain had concentrated either on patriotic glory (Rupert Brooke) or on the horrors, stupidity and criminality of war (Siegfried Sassoon, Wilfred Owen, and several others). This Second world war poem is more about individual emtotion - the narrator seems to be stunned and daydreaming whil he is taught to name the parts of his gun as part of his military training.
