Northern Ireland and Brexit

The border between Northern Ireland and the Republic is one of the questions the Brexit process will have to deal with, and it is not easy.

Les Tubes de la Grande Guerre en Grande-Bretagne

Historians sometimes try to write pieces of a more accessible nature, since the readership of history books is rather restricted. Here is a piece I wrote in French explaining ten of the greatest popular song hits of the first world war:

The first world war in twelve minute podcasts M1 recherche historiographie

History is also transmitted through fiction, though often controversially, since its accuracy, objectives and representativity can easily be contested (see the example of Downton Abbey). The BBc has produced this fictional radio series about British civilians in the First World War, which you might like to have a listen to:

M1 LEA contrôle terminal

Votre note du semestre est composée de deux élements :le devoir maison que vous trouvez sur ce blog, et le contrôle écrit qui aura lieu en cours le mardi 5 décembre.

Si un étudiant est absent de ce contrôle (avec justification ou pas), il ou elle passera l'examen de deuxième session (je crois que c'est en janvier).

The classroom test will consist of a short translation, and a question about one of the subjects we have been studying. For the essay question, you would normally write three or four pages.

The First World war on Twitter!

In class I was beginning to talk about the fact that as well as finding out truths about the past, historians are often interested in how to communicate these findings. History books are indispensable, but can be complemented by a wide variety of other means, which may attract a different audience. Here is a First World War twitter account (from a "twitterstorian"). 13 000 subscribers.

Master 1 LEA / Stephen Lawrence

I spoke in class about the tragic story of Stephen Lawrence, which became a symbol of antiracism in Britain. This 2012 documentary gives some of the background:

Thème Master 2 recherche

The second year research master students were told to attend the first six sessions of thème for agrégation, and this counts as their module "lecture de textes scientifiques" (don't ask). The marking of this module is done via an exam in January. The standard demanded is not as high as that of the agrégation.

I believe you now have other classes on Wednesday mornings, but any student who does not have, and is willing, is of course welcome to continue attending the translation classes.

If you are M2 students who are intending to prepare the agrégation next year, probably the most important thing this year is to read and listen to a very large amount of English indeed. Also, your closest friends should be jealous of the amount of time you spend with your grammar book.
