L3 Option Contestation politique et sociale en Grande Bretagne au XIXe siècle

My L3 British civilization option "Political and social dissent and revolt in 19th century Britain" will take place on Fridays at eleven thirty in room 159.

There will not be a class thir Friday - the first class will be on Friday 5th February.

In the meantime, you need to get hold of the appropriate booklet of historical documents at the LIBALU.

You also need to read a couple of chapters in a history book about 19th century Britain, so that you have the general context, before we look in detail at oppositional movements and organizations.

Now you are in the third year, you should know quite well the collection of history books, encyclopedias etc held in the university library. However, if books are essential for detailed specialized information and authoritative comment, you can get background information on the web .

L2S4 Thème

My L2S4 thème class takes place on Fridays at 10 O clock in room 312. There will be no class this Friday; the first class will be on Friday 5th February.

Before the first class you must get the booklet of passages to translate from the LIBALU and translate the first passage ("Températures négatives...") carefully, with a dictionary and a grammar book. Take note of anything which seems particularly difficult.

Mon groupe de TD en civilisation britannique "From the Reformation to the Great Exhibition" a lieu le jeudi de 14h30 à 16h.

Ce TD ne commence qu'en semaine 2, le jeudi 4 février.

Vous devez vous procurer, avant le premier cours la brochure de documents historiques à la LIBALU, comme pour les autres UE.

Il est également recommandé de lire, avant le cours, un chapitre sur la Réforme dans le livre de Kenneth Morgan (en anglais) ou dans le livre de Roland Marx, en français. Vous trouverez ces livres à la bibliothèque.

Welcome to your second semester course in British Civilization. The mark for the course will be made up of two classroom tests and a final test.
In addition to the classes and the booklet of historical documents, you should read history books, or at least chapters of history books. The books in English by Kenneth Morgan, and in French by Roland Marx, in the University Library, are a good place to start.

You should also visit my teaching blog regularly. I often put on this blog useful links to help you with your studies. If you search the archives of the blog you will find there are already many useful articles, videos etc. It is also on the blog that you will find any administrative information at the appropriate time (your marks, information about absences if I should be ill, and so on). L1S2 Bloc 3 CM Civilisation britannique

ECUE 1 : Panorama de la littérature et de la civilisation anglo-américaines

Les CM en civilisation britannique "Britain since the Romans" ont lieu en amphi gris à 12h le jeudi. Il y aura 6 séance d'une heure, en anglais.

Ces CM (contrairement aux CM de civilisation américaine) ne commenceront qu'en semaine 2, le jeudi 4 février.

Il faudrait que les étudiants lisent le chapitre sur l'Angleterre romaine ou bien du livre de Kenneth Morgan (en anglais) ou bien du livre de Roland Marx (en français). Ces livres se trouvent à la bibliothèque.

A six-lecture course is not very much to cover such a long historical period. I recommend you read in parallel history books : in English if you can (Kenneth Morgan’s book in the University Library would be useful); in French if necessary (there are several copies of Roland Marx’s books in the University Library).

Either before or after these six lectures, you will be following another course of six lectures on US history.

You will be looking at the second part of the British civilization curriculum in more detail in your TD classes “From the Reformation to the Great Exhibition” (or you have already done so in the first semester).

The mark for this course will be based on a single final exam at the end of the semester.

In addition to your reading of history books, you should visit my teaching blog regularly. I often put on this blog useful links to help you with your studies. Option transversale - 150 ans de musique populaire britannique

Tous les étudiants de l'université, sauf ceux du département d'anglais, peuvent s'inscrire, s'ils le souhaitent, pour mon option transversale "150 ans de musique populaire britannique." Il a lieu le jeudi en amphi gris de 16h à 18h. Les cours commencent le 4 février et se déroulent en français. Il y a huit séances de 2 heures, suivies d'un examen de 2 heures.

By far the most serious difficulty for almost everyone is the verb. Many students are beginning with the French *form* to try to decide what form to use in English. This is completely wrong and impossible. You are obliged to begin with the *action or state referred to* and ask yourself questions like

- does it happen in a finished period?
- does it matter to the speaker when it happened,
- are we interested in the proceeding of the action?
- are we talking about a habit ?


These are difficult points. If you want a two-minute explanation, stop studying English and study something else instead :=)

All students should read at least two more time chapters 5 and 6 of "Grammaire explicative de l'anglais" before the first class of the second semester.

These questions need to be taken very seriously. If you wait for these grammar points to become clear by themselves, you will be long dead and buried first.

The following day, the old man left the dormitory at the same time. He was dressed in the same clothes as the day before. He had dressed the little girl the same, too. The women and children laughed at him again. As for the men, they did not even look up. They were too busy playing.

Sometimes they argued. One would accuse another of cheating. Voices were raised. Coins and counters were thrown around. Then all of a sudden, everything would calm down again. They smoked cigarettes which left a grey cloud in the dormitory with a strong, irritating smell.

In the mornings the dormitory was quiet because the three wives used to go out with the children. The children were starting to make the town their own. When they came back, they would use words which Mr. Linh did not understand, and would shout them out in the dormitory. The women would be carrying the provisions they had fetched from the refugee aid bureau and then would make the meal. There was always a helping for Mr. Linh. Tradition insisted. M Linh was the oldest there. He was an old man. The women had to feed him. He knew that. He knew very well that they did not do this through kindness or love. Indeed when one or other of them brought his bowl, she would make a face which made it clear to him. She would put the bowl down in front of him, turn around and go away without saying a word. He would thank her by bowing his head, but she would not even see the gesture.

150 ans de musique populaire britannique

Si vous n'êtes pas étudiant en département LLCE anglais, vous pouvez, si cela vous intéresse, vous inscire en ligne à partir du 18 janvier, pour mon option transversale "150 ans de musique populaire britannique". *Contrairement à l'affichage sur le site web de la faculté*, cette option commence le 4 février et a lieu les jeudis de 16h à 18h (en amphi gris en principe).

Les cours ont lieu en français. Voici le descriptif :

Plus que d’autres pays d’importance similaire, la Grande-Bretagne est réputée pour sa contribution à la musique populaire.

Cette option retracera 150 ans d’histoire de la Grande Bretagne et les musiques populaires qui l’ont marqué. Nous commencerons par la musique folklorique maintes fois « resuscitée » et les fanfares et chorales du milieu du 19 ème siècle. L’urbanisation croissante et les débuts de loisirs ouvriers donneront lieu au music-hall qui passera par différentes transformations jusqu’aux années 1920. En particulier elle incarnera une réaction à la Grande Guerre de 1914-1918, devenant un outil primordial de recrutement et de maintien de morale.

L’arrivée de la radio dans les années 1920 et la popularisation du gramophone transformeront la musique populaire - Les Big Bands, et le Jazz domineront les années 1930. L’arrivée des « trente glorieuses » amènera rapidement de nouvelles transformations, avec le développement de musique « de génération » - le Skiffle, le Rock n Roll et d’autres, tandis que l’arrivée d’une immigration antillaise importante influera également.

La crise économique apportera le punk rock et des phénomènes similaires, la révolution technologique permettra la musique techno, et de nouvelles générations exprimeront un sentiment d’intégration ou de rébellion à travers le rap, le Banghra et d’autres formes musicales.

Ces cours, donnés en français, exploreront les outils d’analyse de l’histoire culturelle, et proposera des adaptations des outils musicologiques pour tenir compte de certains caractéristiques de la musique populaire.

I have also put an envelope up in front of room 208 with your phonetics scripts. Please do come and get them. A recent scientific study shows that the students who look carefully at their scripts after the exam are 72.24 % more likely to get a pass mark for their university year.

L2 thème

I will post your marks here in a day or two. I am a little concerned about some students making the *same* mistakes as in the test a few months ago. This should not happen. When I return your scripts you need to study them to eliminate the errors, not just hope you have better luck next time!

I will leave your scripts next week in an envelope in front of my office (208) so you can take them and (after a short rest :=)) study them. Remember, noone has ever absorbed a good level of grammar, you have to study it!

L2 Civilization Research papers

The research papers must be handed in (in my "casier" or at the departmental secretary's office) before Tuesday evening.

One or two students have not noticed they had to do a research paper!
So here are the instructions again, from last November.

L2 British civilization. Research paper instructions November 2009

Each student in the “régime général” will choose one of the following subjects to write a research paper on.

- The research paper must be handed in immediately after the Christmas holidays.

- The research paper will be 1500 - 1600 words in length, plus the bibliography.

- The bibliography must contain at least five books and five websites.

- Handwritten work is not allowed. The research paper must be typewritten, and must use correctly the normal rules of layout for university work (footnotes, italics etc). There should be no spelling mistakes, as students will use automatic spellcheck programmes.

- Extreme care must be used to avoid plagiarism. If you use more than five words together from another source without saying where it comes from, this counts as copying.

- We will not be studying these subjects in any great detail in class. I will however put some links on my Teaching Blog to help you out a little. The address is http://johncmullen.blogspot.com/

- If you have questions to ask, you can leave them as comments on the Teaching blog (so other students can learn too) or contact me at john.mullen@wanadoo.fr

- Your research paper should reflect the fact that historians have different opinions. It should avoid simply giving a list of events, but should evaluate their importance.

Choose ONE of these subjects

A) The development of education over the twentieth century constitutes one of the deepest changes in people’s lives in Britain.

B) Did the twenty five years after the second worl war really constitute a Golden Age in Britain?

C) How and why have attitudes to children in Britain been completely transformed since 1900?

L1 Bloc 2 Identités et conflits sociaux et ethniques

Pour les étudiants en régime général, je vous rappelle que votre contrôle final a lieu ce vendredi. Vous devez aussi rendre ce vendredi le devoir maison. Si vous avez besoin d'un peu plus de temps, j'accepterai le devoir maison jusqu'à mardi soir le 12 janvier. Le devoir doit être rendu ce vendredi lors du contrôle, ou dans mon casier dans la salle des enseignants au premier étage à côté de la scolarité. Il ne peut en aucun cas être rendu par courrier électronique.

Je préfère un devoir imprimé, mais j'accepte les devoirs manuscrits. Je vous rappelle qu'aucune phrase ne doit être prise dans une autre source (sauf en cas de citation dîment marqué et justifié). Copier dans une autre source, c'est de la fraude, et les règles de l'université sont très claires sur ce point.

Quand j'aurai corrigé les contrôles, j'afficherai sur ce blog les notes (avec vos prénoms seulement). Il faudrait que vous soyez patients - j'ai plusieurs centaines de copies.

L2 Civilization

We have one class left, this Friday, when I'm hoping you will be giving me your research paper. Handwritten papers are not accepted.

The research paper gets marked in two different ways. First of all it gets a mark on twenty for the quality of the research and the English. This is included, as marked in the admin booklet, in the calculation of your general mark for the British Civilization module.

The research paper will also receive, or not, the TICE point, which you need to complete the year. This will be given, or not, for the technical quality of the paper (No typing errors or spelling errors, correct use of footnotes, correct presentation of bibliography...)

When I have marked the research papers, I will post the marks here on this blog (though I will only identify you by your first name, so as not to broadcast your mark to the world for eternity). You will have to be patient though, I have a very large number of scripts to mark.

L2 Thème Paris 12

Jeudi vous aurez votre contrôle final de premier semestre. La meilleure façon de préparer le contrôle est de réviser à nouveau les temps, et en particulier le BE + ING et le HAVE + EN. Sortez vos "Grammaire Explicative de l'anglais" !

Lorsque j'aurais corrigé vos copies, j'afficherai ici sur ce blog les notes (avec vos prénoms).

Au deuxième semestre, vous travaillerez un type de traduction tout à fait différent - la traduction d'articles de journaux.
