"Naming of Parts" by Henry Reed
This link takes you to the texte of one of the most famous poems from the Second World War.
First world war poems in Britain had concentrated either on patriotic glory (Rupert Brooke) or on the horrors, stupidity and criminality of war (Siegfried Sassoon, Wilfred Owen, and several others). This Second world war poem is more about individual emtotion - the narrator seems to be stunned and daydreaming whil he is taught to name the parts of his gun as part of his military training.
