Clauses and commas (translation class)

For the third time this week, our translation passage included examples where, in French, two independent clauses were separated by a comma. You cannot do this in English, but it takes time to digest this idea, it seems.

Here is an essential quiz:

The same website includes many quizzes which you may find useful, although they concentrate on the errors made by native speakers.

Video 19th century British politics

This documentary is not specifically about Home Rule, but gives a good idea of the atmosphere and methods of 19th century politics in the UK, even if it forgets some important elements ( for example the mass popular movements involved in winning the extension of democracy in 1867).

New book just out

https://www.routledge.com/Popular-Song-in-the-First-World-War-An-International-Perspective/Mullen/p/book/9781138478466

What did popular song mean to people across the world during the First World War? For the first time, song repertoires and musical industries from countries on both sides in the Great War as well as from neutral countries are analysed in one exciting volume. Experts from around the world, and with very different approaches, bring to life the entertainment of a century ago, to show the role it played in the lives of our ancestors. The reader will meet the penniless lyricist, the theatre chain owner, the cross-dressing singer, fado composer, stage Scotsman or rhyming soldier, whether they come from Serbia, Britain, the USA, Germany, France, Portugal or elsewhere, in this fascinating exploration of showbiz before the generalization of the gramophone. Singing was a vector for patriotic support for the war, and sometimes for anti-war activism, but it was much more than that, and expressed and constructed debates, anxieties, social identities and changes in gender roles. This work, accompanied by many links to online recordings, will allow the reader to glimpse the complex role of popular song in people’s lives in a period of total war.

The grammar of "condemned to"

In our agrégation translation class the question came up of the acceptability of different grammatical structures after "condemned".

One would normally expect  "condemned to die" "condemned to remain a second-rate author".
The form "condemned to remaining" seemed very strange to me, despite the presence of many structures with " condemned to" followed by a noun, which is usually a sign that an ING form would be possible. "Condemned to death" "condemned to prison".

The way to be sure about such questions is to search on the British national corpus, a huge collection of British English sentences from books, magazines and newspapers. There is a search website here : https://corpus.byu.edu/bnc/

If you search for "condemned to" on this page, you can see what the situation is.

Epreuve de linguistique agrégation interne

Students preparing the agrégation interne: someone asked me what were the best books to start with to prepare the linguistics test. I had no idea, but my colleague and linguistician Mme Goudet said that these two books were a good place to start.

Of course, those students preparing the agrégation interne who are free on Tuesday mornings should attend Mme Goudet's class for the externes.

What was I doing in Germany

I was invited to Germany to give a lecture (in English) to the annual conference of the Society for research in Music, on my research on First World War British popular song. You can find it here in MP3: it will be of interest to students of British history.

Home rule video again

You first need to become really at ease with the timeline, the main characters, the main issues. This documentary about Parnell is useful. As with most TV documentaries, it is rather partisan, but many important issues, organizations and people are presented.

Part two

As I mentioned, there is  no class next week. I will be posting here in a few days some links to videos and articles. Over the course of the semester I will post quite a number of links. You do not need to visit all of them, but do visit some.

Evaluation of this course is by final exam in January. You will be given a general essay title (I remember one year it was "How cultural is cultural history?") . The subject will be general enough for you to sow what you have learned, your own reflections etc. If you want a very good mark, talk  (among other things) about some video, book etc which I do not know already.

Thème Agrégation / M2

If you are looking for the passages to translate, you need to go to the blog message from August 19, 2018.

There is no thème class next week (it was not possible to find a space on the Tuesday). This means that the progamme has changed a little: you have longer to send me your translation of Djian, and each of the other passages will be one week later than planned.

Send your translations to john.mullen AT univ-rouen.fr  . If you only have time to do a rough translation, do not send it to me that week, only send translations you are happy with. You may, if you wish, send only the first half of the passage.

I will post on the blog in a day or two my suggested translation of the first passage. It will stay online for a couple of weeks only.

There is special information for those students who are enrolled for the "agrégation interne". Occasionally you will miss my thème class, as other classes had to be scheduled at the same time. IN this case, you may still send me your translation, or you can just work from the suggested translation I put up. Next Wednesday, you would have missed my translation class, as you have another class.

There is a whole list of words which are difficult to translate from French to English, because the translation depends on the context (and English is not translated French). One of these is that fine word "enjeux". This useful table from Linguee shows some of the ways it is translated in particular contexts (and shows you the usefulness of Linguee, especially for political or economic words).

Thème agrégation/M2 starting Wednesday

I'll explain all this in class of course, but written info is good.
In week two (26th January and the following days) I have been invited to Osnabrück in Germany to talk about "Uses of British Popular Song during the First World War". And they are paying for travel, meals etc, so obviously this is an offer I can't refuse! I had intended to try to replace this class on the day before, the Tuesday, but the agrégation students have classes all day. So there is no "thème" class in week two. For the agrégation people, this class will be made up some time in the New Year. For the M2 people, note that you must be with us for the first six classes (that is to say, including the class on 7th November). M2 students who wish to may continue to come to classes after the 7th November, but are not obliged to do so. The passages we translate generally rotate on a three-year programme, so even if you are thinking of preparing the agrégation next year, you won't be being asked to work twice on the same material. See you all on Wednesday.

Jeremy Corbyn

I wrote a review of Alex Nunn's excellent book about the leader of the British Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn. You can find the review here :

Thème agrégation/M2 0918

I have started commenting the translations I have received and am sending them back to their authors. I have used a system of "points faute". Don't worry if you have quite a number of these (For the moment everyone has more than 50). Last year, even people who got their agrégation began the year with quite a lot.

Otherwise I was delighted to find that an absolutely essential and practical book about the use of tense and aspect in English is now available free on the internet. Download it and read it carefully:
