In 1958, and for several decades afterwards, the BBC produced the children's programme "Blue Peter" which included human interest stories, introductions to science, how to make things with your hands at home, and a whole series of part entertainment part educational topics, presented by relentlessly cheerful adults, and the dog, Shep.
The programme was much loved by generations of children. It did of course simplify many subjects, and this aspect allowed the Monty Python to produce this brilliant parody :
