Since 1972, the BBC has broadcast the children's programme Newsround, aimed at children (from six to eleven years old, perhaps). It attempts to explain to children certain aspects of the week's news. Defenders of public service television might argue that this is a good example of an innovative programme which would have difficulty surviving on a commercial channel. The fact that it has lasted so many years no doubt shows that it kept a certain number of viewers.
Judge for yourselves its quality (although remember that children were far less sophisticated than they are today).
