Agrégation BBC: Students at Rouen

In class I did not get to the end of the timeline. There are now videos of mine online which take you up to 1995:

After 1980  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqMdu17EfJ0

The BBC under Thatcher https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ky_UIk8EtRQ

Previous decades we covered in class IRL. However, I have put online, on my YouTube channel, the videos I made last year during lockdown. You may find these useful for revising. Also note that they are broadly the same classes, but not identical at all : I present a certain number of questions differently. I will leave you to find the videos on my YouTube channel, which is here :

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvLLgJ4sKK4397db6PiYuRQ

Each video is around 30 minutes. You will find

Seven videos covering the BBC since the Second World War

Three videos covering the BBC before the Second World War

Three videos on the Commissions of Enquiry

Two videos on the Director-Generals

Three videos making up a general introduction

And one dense video in French

There is a certain amateurism in the channel: in particular don't take any notice of the first few seconds of the videos, in which I give the chapters numbers according to a rather bizarre numbering system.

There will be a couple more videos on other BBC subjects over the next few weeks.

First World War historiography seminar

The aim of the seminar is to look at what historians do and why. In the case of university historians, the products we are expected to produce include

 - books (300 to 500 pages). These take a long time so we do not do many.

- articles  or chapters (4000 to 6000 words) Here is an example about humour in First World War song

https://hal-normandie-univ.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-02488298/document

 - papers (that is to say, speeches) at university conferences. These generally last twenty minutes, and should be quite concentrated. Hre is an example I gave in Greece

M1 MEEF More revision of aspects of British history

As you know, the programme for the CAPES exam changes regularly. For 2022 it is as follows :

Thème des programmes de collège

- Rencontres avec d’autres cultures

Axes d’étude des programmes de lycée

- Art et contestation
- Diversité et inclusion
- Fiction et réalité
- Relation entre l’individu et le groupe

We will be working a lot on diversity and inclusion in November and December. For the topic « Art et contestation », the work many of you did with me in L3 on high culture and popular culture, both in the visual arts and in music will be helpful for you : I hope you have not thrown your notes away. Those of you who did not have this class with me in L3 will find useful material by searching on this blog, or on my Youtube channel

https://www.youtube.com/c/JohnMullenTheHistoryFellow

Last year, one of the themes was « le passé dans le présent ». This theme is no longer on the programme. However, I do recommend that you watch the videos I made last year during lockdown, because they deal with many aspects of British history, including diversity and inclusion, and the relation between the individual and the group. There are six half-hour videos, and you will find them here :

1  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RkxtVGKdtE

2  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gv_zAJqSLK0

3  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00rVfOC8w2w

4  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wq-MSR6CsSo

M1 MEEF CAPES exercise from last year. Read carefully.

As you know, this semester you will soon receive a homework exercise in the form of documents to comment upon.  This is close to the exercise you will have in the CAPES. We have time to work up to the exam: forthe moment you should be reading the UK and US press once a week, and a good history book. If you don't know anything about history and politics, you will obviously not get a decent mark.

To prepare for this semester's homework assignment, I would like you to look very carefully indeed at the assignment I gave the MEEF people last year, and the comments I made about their mistakes and difficulties. You will find all this  here:

M1 MEEF diversité

Un des grands thèmes du programme du CAPES est la diversité (multiculturalisme etc). Cet article sur le festival de Notting Hill examine un aspect de  cette question.

Agrégation BBC - Rouen students

In last week's class, which I could not come to because I was ill; I was intending to 1) finish the timeline  and 2) Talk about television theory . There will be videos doing each of these things over the next few weeks.

If you wish to practice your dissertation skill, you can write me a dissertation on "The BBC and Modernity" and I will comment on your work.

We have classes in early 2022 on dissertation (2 x 1 hour) and on commentary (3 x 2 hours).

If you have questions, send me an email. And don't forget to search this blog for "BBC" if you want more links to videos, articles etc.

M2 Thème

M2 LES Cours de thème à partir du 27.10

For the second half of the first semester, M2 students will be joining in the translation classes which are also for those preparing the agrégation. You will find the booklet of passages we are translating here:  http://www.jcmullen.fr/0921themebooklet.pdf

On the 27th we will be on passage number seven, by Masse. Please prepare a translation before the class, and bring both the passage and the translation with you. Each week, if you send me your translation by email john.mullen@univ-rouen.fr by the Friday *before* we study that particular passage in class, I will send you by email individualized commentary. Please do not give me anything on paper.

After the class, each week, I post on my teaching blog http://johncmullen.blogspot.com/ a suggested translation with plenty of notes concerning the particular difficulties involved. This translation remains on my blog for two or three weeks only .

If you are thinking of taking the agrégation after your Master’s degree, do not worry – every year the passages are different, on a three year rotation.

Agrégation BBC week four Rouen podcast history of the BBC 1945- 1963

In week four I looked at 1945 to somewhere around the middle of the 1960s.

You will find the recording here (two and a half hours long)

Agrégation BBC week three Rouen podcast history of the BBC part three

In the third week I looked at the BBC from 1922 to 1945

Here is the recording (almost two and a half hours).

And here are the slides which accompanied the talk

thème - warning

We do most things online these days - encyclopedias etc. When working on translations, one can often find  help with difficulties of vocabulary online - many online dictionaries are quite good these days, especially if they are accompanied by plenty of examples of the use of a word (eg  https://www.linguee.fr/ )

This is not the case for online grammar, as I was reminded when I was correcting your latest work. I was looking for online explanations of the uses of "have someone do/ make someone do/ get someone to do/ have sthg done/ get sthg done". If you Google this kind of question, most of the answers given by different websites, forums etc are completely incorrect. This may be because amateurs think they understand grammar and do not (whereas amateurs may be quite good at giving examples of vocabulary use). I certainly know from experience that if you ask French people who are not linguistics experts to explain uses of the subjunctive, they will give you hopelessly inaccurate explanations.

So, for grammar explanations, do not look online. The only exception is where I give here on the blog a link. This means I will have checked the site and the explanations will be good. Stick very closely to your Grammaire explicative de l'Anglais...
