North sea Oil and Gas
North sea oil and gas began coming onstream in the 1970s, and has made a huge difference to Britain's economy, which is why, in the 1970s in particular there were fierce debates about how much tax North Sea oil companies should pay, and what kind and extent of public ownership should be involved. Scottish nationalism also got a boost from the fact that billions of dollars worth of fuel were not far off its shores.
