The 1970s and 1980s were times of fierce debate inside the two main parties, as the crisis hit, unemployment and industrial conflict were on the rise, and party activists assessed and reassessed what was possible, necessary and desirable. In the Labour Party, the Left was represented by figures such as Tony Benn (who later moved on to concentrate more on extra parliamentary movements) and Michael Foot, who was very Left wing on a number of issues, yet in many ways moved solidly in establishment circles with establishment friends.
This documentary on Michael Foot will help you understand the kinds of issues, values and debates which made up the life of the Labour party forty years ago.
