At the time, the expression "reality television" did not exist. We called this a "fly on the wall documentary". But it was based on the idea that viewers might want to watch "ordinary people " in extracts from an "ordinary life". The 1974 programme opens up the question of what the viewers got out of it - what "uses and gratifications" were provided by the programme.

This is brillant! Brings me back to my childhood days in Molesey, albeit a decade earlier. Not that much difference in lifestyle between those two periods. And I had my head up in the clouds too, a bit like the Wilkins' youngest son.
