Those who are planning on taking the agrégation in 2021 will perhaps have noticed that the new question on "civilisation britannique" is out, and concerns the history of the BBC. The framework document (texte de cadrage) is here:

I will be posting here regularly links and information concerning this question - most frequently links to videos, but also to other useful elements as publications and academic conferences and seminars take up the challenge of exploring the history of this very impressive institution, a history which is multiform and includes the institutional, the political, the economic, the social and the cultural. I am sure you have followed more closely than I have, but this is what I understood.

Agrégation externe: the orals will take place before the summer holidays.

(So my remaining classes on James Cook will go ahead, beginning on 29th April as planned).

Agrégation interne: the orals will take place after the summer holidays.

(So concerning Home Rule, I am doing a few mock exams with individuals in April and May, but I will also try to schedule a class or two at the beginning of September.
Similarly I will try to schedule two or three more classes of compréhension orale then).

Banque alimentaire

A destination des étudiants, notamment étrangers, confinés en Cité Universitaire et qui ne bénéficient plus du Restaurant Universitaire :

La Banque alimentaire assure chaque semaine 2 dépôts de nourriture à destination des étudiants :
- au Madrillet (Technopôle) devant la faculté des Sciences le mardi de 17h30 à 18h30.
- à Mont Saint Aignan, dans le local CCU (Spiritus) le mardi à partir de 17h30 et peut-être le jeudi en plus  (la semaine prochaine).

Actuellement sur le site de Mont-Saint Aignan 100 panier-repas (3-5 kg) sont distribués chaque semaine aux étudiants inscrits en début d'année ou en cours d'année.
La responsable de l'épicerie itinérante de la Banque alimentaire ne sait pas encore si l'équipe va prendre de nouvelles inscriptions. Une centaine de repas distribués leur paraît un maximum pour le cubage de leur camionnette.

N'hésitez pas à faire suivre ce message aux étudiants concernés qui sont confinés en Cité Universitaire sans Restaurant Universitaire et qui ont perdu leur job étudiant.

Etudiants de Rouen

Je souhaite à nouveau souhaiter bon courage à tous et à toutes. 

L'université a procédé à une enquête. On a trouvé que 850 sur les 6630 étudiant e s qui ont répondu sont confiné e s seul e s (et généralement dans un tout petit logement). 

Si vous trouvez un moment pour contacter des camarades  que vous pensez vivre seul e s, ce serait un super geste, même si vous ne les connaissez pas bien.

Il existe également des étudiants dans des situations dramatiques, sans revenu aucun. L'adresse mail

permet de contacter le service social de l'université, qui peut vous aider. Ils ont déjà aidé beaucoup d'étudiants (bons supermarchés, prêts informatiques etc).

Chères et chers collègues,

Le président du jury de l'agrégation externe nous adresse ce message, ce dont nous le remercions vivement :

Le ministère a annoncé que « les concours nationaux initialement programmés pendant les mois d’avril et de mai de cette année 2020 sont reportés et seront réorganisés à partir de la fin du mois de mai. Les concours de recrutement de l'Éducation nationale devraient avoir lieu, sous réserve de l’évolution de la situation sanitaire, entre juin et juillet ».

Il est à noter que les épreuves d’admissibilité de l’agrégation externe se sont déroulées au mois de mars, avant la mise en place des mesures de confinement, et que les travaux de correction ont débuté.

L’objectif est de respecter dans la mesure du possible le calendrier prévu, même si de toute évidence aucune garantie ne peut être apportée à ce stade. La prudence voudrait que les candidats continuent à suivre les préparations aux épreuves d’admission, afin d’être prêts au cas où les oraux commenceraient bien le 8 juin 2020.

April the first - what the papers say

I hope you and your families are safe and well.

Traditionally in Britain, the media print false stories as a joke on April the first. These can be quite sophisticated. Famously, in 1977, The Guardian printed a seven page supplement to celebrate the anniversary of the independence of San Seriffe. But in fact they had invented the existence of the country. Read the details here.

Previously, no doubt the most well-known example was the BBC news report on the Spaghetti harvest. You can watch it here

Today, with the crisis in progress, extravagant jokes might seem to be in bad taste. Nevertheless it may be that some stories in the news are untrue. Sadly, the ones we wish were not true are not jokes. Today's newspapers see the conservative Daily Mail (normally not a critic of Johnson) criticizing the government, and The Sun praising the role of the army in dealing with the crisis. We also see the light-hearted tradition of British tabloids, with a front page about seagulls.

O tempora O mores ! Jour 7 du confinement

J’espère que chacun e est en sécurité et en bonne santé, et vos familles aussi. Chez moi, tous les jours à 20h nous allons à la fenêtre applaudir les soignants , infirmiers, médecins etc. je sais que  parmi nos étudiant e s, il y a un certain nombre qui travaillent dans un supermarché. Le travail est plus intense et plus inquiétant que d’habitude. Alors un très grand remerciement à ces travailleurs indispensables qui nous permettent de manger presque normalement en ces temps très difficiles !

Les nouvelles consignes gouvernementales concernant l'expansion du coronavirus obligent à reporter à une date ultérieure les épreuves écrites et orales des concours de recrutement  du ministère de l'Education nationale, externes et internes publics et privés (y compris les examens professionnels).

Les concours - pour l'instant (au 15/03/2020) - reportés sont ceux prévus dans la semaine du 16 mars. Les candidats concernés sont prévenus par email.

M1 LEA Devoir maison

Nous sommes tous obligé e s de réorganiser notre vie, de penser à nos parents plus âgés  etc, dans cette période inédite. Alors si vous avez besoin d'encore quelques jours pour rendre votre devoir maison, il n'y a pas de souci. 

Etudiant e s à Rouen en capes interne et en agrégation

Je suis convaincu que la décision de fermer les écoles et les universités etc va sauver des milliers de vie, même si elle complique considérablement notre vie tout de suite, notamment pour ceux et celles qui ont des enfants en bas âge. De plus, si vous êtes en poste au collège et au lycée vous devez inventer la continuité pédagogique numérique, généralement sans les ressources ni la formation nécessaires. Cela, rajouté à l'angoisse généralisée, rend la préparation du concours plus difficile.

De mon côté, je suis disponible par skype sur rendez-vous pour des examens blancs - en commentaire (Home Rule ou Captain Cook) ou en compréhension (capes interne ou agreg interne). N'hésitez pas de toute façon à m'envoyer un mail pour dire où vous en êtes (john point mullen at univ-rouen.fr).

Bon courage pour la réorganisation de votre vie quotidienne. Pensez aux personnes âgées qui habitent dans votre immeuble, et suivez les consignes d'hygeine et de distance sociale.

Une fac pour tout le monde

Certain e s d'entre vous auront entendu parler de cette histoire, qui a été source d'énormément de détresse pour des étudiantes et des enseignantes, dont des amies à moi .

Il nous faut une université où tout le monde se sent en sécurité, pour avoir des chances de construire les amitiés et les solidarités dont nous avons besoin et qui nous serviront toute notre vie.

C'est la raison pour laquelle il faut espérer que les auteurs de ces agissements soient exclus de l'université, au minimum.

Remerciements aux étudiantes et aux étudiants qui ont refusé de laisser passer cela en silence. Il faut que nous sachions tous refuser bruyamment tout cela. Les hommes ont une responsabilité particulière de contester de tels agissements, car ce genre de machistes aime supposer que les hommes en général sont d'accord avec eux. Alors que c'est dans l'égalité et le respect que nous saurons tous avancer.

Evaluation of this module is by research paper (« mini-dossier »)

The research paper will be 2500 - 5000 words in length, in addition to the bibliography and appendices.

The subject must be approved by your teacher in advance.

It must be based on archival research, online or otherwise.

An essential resource is http://scholar.google.fr/schhp?hl=en which allows you to search university articles, some of which are available free online.

Don’t forget the University Library database which you can access through your University Virtual Deskstop (ENT).

This also includes many articles you can download even when you are at home.

- Handwritten work is not allowed. The research paper must be sent by email in RTF format, and must use correctly the normal rules of layout for university work (footnotes, italics etc).  My email adress is prenom.nom @univ-rouen.fr (John Mullen).

There will be no spelling or typing mistakes, as students will use automatic spellcheck programmes.

Extreme care must be used to avoid plagiarism. If you use more than five words together from another source without saying where it comes from, this counts as copying.

The research paper may be illustrated, if the illustrations add something to the argument.

It must be handed in by the 4th of May 2020.

This module receives two marks: a  classroom test on 3^rd March is worth 50%. And there is a homework assignment, also worth 50%. Here is the homework. Watch the video linked below carefully. Summarize its contents in 500 words, and give your opinion in 300 words. The homework must be done on computer and not handwritten. Captain Cook agrégation 2020 option civilisation post 43: Hawkesworth and the journals

You will have heard that a certain Mr Hawkesworth was asked by the admiralty (and very well paid) to write a book based on Cook's first journal. He mixed together his own material with Cook's journals and those of Joseph Banks. What he wrote did not Always please Cook.

Although you are unlikely to have the time to read the whole of it, an 1821 edition of Hawkesworth's book is available free online here, and this will give you a taste of how Cook was presented to his British contemporaries.
