L3 Popular Culture for the classroom test

Here are some more resources to help you revise for the classroom test.
This is the powerpoint which accompanied the class on British TV and radio.
This is the powerpoint which accompanied the class on British cinema.

Remember this classroom test is worth 12% of the total mark
Another 12% is the classroom test you did in US civilization.
36% is the final written exam you will have in either US or British civilization.

And 40% is the oral on the book list (US or GB). I am just re-reading these books, and you should be too ! you will have to comment on an extract *in the context of the book* The Engels and the Orwell, are, incidentally, available free online.

L3 Popular Culture

The Classroom test next Tuesday will be two hours long. It will consist of a short commentary and a short essay. This is a rather British way of doing things (a two hour exam often contains three forty minute essays!) and I know that in France essays are usually much longer. But if you show that you have good information and are opening up good questions, you should have no problem.

The last class and the article on cultural studies, I have decided, will not figure in this classroom test, though it may figure in the four hour exam in May, if British civilization is chosen as the subject for this exam (as you know, British or US civilization is selected at random for this exam).

Remember that in the May session you also have the orals concerning the book lists. If you have not opened these books, do it now.

The exam in May, which will either be on British or US civilisation, might be easier if you revise this page https://www.lettres-et-arts.net/notions-techniques-definitions/methode-dissertation+51

Scottish and Welsh nationalists are particularly worried about the possbility of Britain leaving Europe. One proposal which is gaining support is a joint independence project. See here

I mentioned in classes on visual art that as far as I know only one British artist had a pop song written about him. Here it is.

Popular culture and other questions: what did you do in the 1970s

The 1970s are a long way off for young students today. Before the internet, before rap, before mobile phones, McDonalds, and - for the first few years - before mass unemployment for a whole generation. In the UK, this was before Sushi, before international terrorism, before the end of the cold war.

This documentary, especially the visual side of it, gives a fascinating glimpse.

Master LEA Homework March/April 2016

In the second semester there is just one homework, and the classroom test which is on the 15th of March. Here is the homework.

Watch this PBS video about women in US comedy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU4QIk6yx_k

Summarize the main points in five hundred words, then give your opinion and/or reflections in 300 words.

Before you begin, read again carefully the comments I made on your homeworks from the first semester. I do not expect any student to make the same mistakes which I corrected in the first semester.

Send me your homework by mail before the 5th April 2016.

My talk in Glasgow on trade unionism and the music hall in the first world war

This talk was given in January 2016 at a conference in Glasgow
Working in Music: The Musicians’ Union, musical labour and employment. Mitchell Library, Glasgow, 14 and 15 January 2016.

The abstract of the paper is below, and
you can listen to the MP3 recording here

Music hall and trade unionism during world war one
Singers and musicians in the union journal “The Performer” 1914-1918

John Mullen, Université de Rouen

“The Performer” was the union journal of the Variety Artistes Federation, which was set up in 1906. The VAF represented many different types of performers, but singers and musical performers were an important proportion: no doubt a third of the members were singers. The singers and musicians in the VAF generally travelled from town to town following their bookings, an individualist lifestyle which distinguished them from the majority of musicians, who were employed in house orchestras of music halls or cinemas.

My article using the union journal from the war years and in particular its cartoons aims at analyzing union activity in these years. What ideas were prioritized : patriotism, mutual help, union discipline, respectability, strikes, workers’ solidarity ?

Dr John Mullen is Professor at the University of Rouen in France. He has published widely on the history of popular music. His full length study The Show Must Go On: Popular Song in Britain during the First World War was published by Ashgate in August 2015 as part of the Ashgate Popular and Folk Music series.

L3 Popular culture: starting on popular music

On Tuesday I'll be moving onto British popular music.

What is popular music ? Why does it make people so cross?
Is there a specifically British current, and if so why?
What are the key genres we need to identify?

This week I will be looking at
The folk music revival of the 1950s and 1960s
Late music hall in the 1950s and 1960s
Big band in the 1950s and 1960s.

And the values, activities and discourses surrounding each of these topics.

Visit this link to hear three of four songs from the British folk repertoire.

On the second of March we will look briefly at the passage which was the DST on the 24th Feb, and then we will move onto this passage: we will probably only get through the first half, I would think.

Thème agrégation 24 février

On the 24th, I will not be there, but I will be leaving a passage with your other teacher; At 9 am you will do the "thème" passage and at 10.30 the "version" passage. (Unless you are one of the students who have a class in didactics that morning).

I will try to put the passage up on the blog the following weekend so that we can look at it together on the 2nd March, along with the beginning of another passage which I am going to put up here soon.

English for Master histoire: Homework

The marks for this semester, for the master histoire people, will be made up of two elements

1) This homework and

2) A classroom test in the last class.

I need to check but I think the weighting is 60/40 respectively.

Homework : watch this BBC history programme (It is episode 4 in the series).
Explain and summarize the main points of the programme in 500 words.
Then give your opinion as a viewer and as a historian in 500 words.

Send your work, as an RTF file, to me by email (john point mullen arrobaz w a n a d o o point FR )
before the 18th of April.

It is not necessary for me to say that no sentence must be copied from anywhere else (since this is against the rules of the university). In this particular case, any more than five consecutive words taken from elsewhere (without justification and referencing) will cause a serious problem.

Our new topic, as you know, is women in the USA.

Grammar "used to"

Students of all levels and all standards seem to have problems with "used to" which is more complex than you think. Some of the explanations on the internet are very poor. This is one of the best:

Remember that if you want to talk or write about habits in general : what you habitually eat, what the company habitually demands etc, you do not use "used to" in any of its forms: an adverb like "usually" is sufficient.

I usually have sushi on Saturdays.
These companies normally only take on people who have a master's degree.

We have finished looking at India and its economy. Our next topic is going to be "Women in the USA". We will be looking at some aspects of this vast question.

Master LEA December classroom test

I have started marking your classroom tests. About half the students are quite a long way below a master's level in English. It is very important that you listen a lot to BBC radio ( on any subject which interests you) and that you read newspapers. Try setting the homepage on your computer to yahoo.co.uk.

If you read and listen, your vocabulary and comprehension will improve. Your grammar, however, will not improve automatically. Be honest : how many students have not opened their grammar book all year? Read two pages of your grammar book every morning, that's what the doctor says.

More specifically on the classroom test:

1) contractions are obligatory in spoken English, except in very formal circumstances. You should not use contractions in writing, except in very informal circumstances (emails to friends, for example). No contractions, then, in university written work.

2) One sentence, in university work and often in professional work, should not be a paragraph by itself.

3) When you give in your script at the end of the test, do not give in the subject, too. This gives the impression that you are still in high school and completely uninterested in knowing the answers to the questions.
