L3 British Popular Culture: Popular music in the nineteen seventies

I will have to spend less time in class on popular music than I had wanted, so here is some reading. This first article is about Popular music and society in the 1970s. It tries to look at questions of how popular music changes because of technology, social developments, political crises, and what the new kinds of music established in the  1970s offered to their audiences.

This article looks at one particular rock group from 1970s Britain and poses the question "What Can Political Rock Do?" This is an ongoing debate: some people think rock, hip hop or other kinds of music change the world, whereas other people think that radical music is only listened to by people who already agree, and so has very little effect...
