L2 Phonetics evaluation

The L2 Phonetics will be evaluated by two elements.

1) A Homework (here it is in word format)

a) This is to be handed in either by email before the 3rd May, in RTF format, following exactly the instructions given at the end of the homework. OR on paper at the time of the classroom exam Thursday 7 May at 14h30 salle PF 902.

b) Some information which will be useful is in the different posts to this blog which you can find here .

2) The classroom test on the 7th May. The programme which you were reminded of at the meeting on the 6th April is here.



If you are not able to download these documents because you don't know enough about computers, send me an email and I will send them to you. Make sure the "objet" of your email is explicit. I receive three hundred mails a day and if your email is entitled "pas d'objet" or "renseignement" I might miss it. If it is entitled "besoin de document - programme phonétique L2" that would be much easier for me.

I have also put an envelope up in front of room 208 with your phonetics scripts. Please do come and get them. A recent scientific study shows that the students who look carefully at their scripts after the exam are 72.24 % more likely to get a pass mark for their university year.

The short dictation test for my L2 phonetics group is this wek - the day after tomorrow.

I've just started marking your phonetics scripts. Here is the answer to the last question.

What is the difference between

a) Michael will be waiting for them at the airport HOPEfully.

AND

b) Michael will be waiting for them at the AIRport hopefully.


In the first sentence, the adverb does not apply to the whole sentence. The adverb received the nucleus because it is the last lexical word of the sentence. That is to say the adverb relates to the verb. Michael, while he waits, will be full of hope.


In the second sentence, "hopefully" does not receive the nucleus. This shows that the adverb refers to the whole of the sentence - it is the speaker, and not Michael, who is feeling hopeful.

L2S4 Phonetics

My L2S4 phonetics class is at 9 O clock on Friday mornings, in room 0053 (just off the underground carpark).

There will be no class this Friday. The first class will be Friday 5th February.

All students - test dates

My phonetics students will have a short test in phonetic dictation next week. To know how much these tests are worth, consult the blue booklet.
My L1 Civilization students just had their first test, the second in in a few weeks time.
My L2 thème students have a translation test tomorrow Friday for the whole of the class time.
My L1 Thème/grammaire students have a one hour test tomorrow Friday.
My L3 Option A students have their first test - a text commentary - next week (not tomorrow).
My L1 LANSAD students have their first test tomorrow Friday.

You may need to be patient - I have a lot of scripts.

Your classroom test will be on the 3rd of December. It will only last half an hour. The first part will be a dictation for phonetic transcription. The second part will be articulatory description of short words.

L1 Course on Britain since the Romans :
The final lecture is on Thursday 6 May at the usual time. The exam, combined with US civilization and with Literature, is on 17th May - see the Faculty website.
